SXSW: 350 bands announced!!!

Well, sort of. The Austinist, who are usually correct about these matters, have a list of the "rumored" SXSW bands HERE. If I was going this year I'd be pretty stoked about seeing The Soundtrack of Our Lives...it's been a long time gentlemen, and maybe Dolly Parton. The rest of the list will make there way through Los Angeles in the coming months.

Here are some tips for those who have never been to SXSW:

1. Don't go big the first night out. I know, tall-boys of PBR and/or Lone Star are tough to resist.

2. Don't buy a badge or bother going to "bigger shows". Those bands will be playing in town the following week when you get back.

3. Spend your time at the Blogger day parties. They are almost always FREE, have the best lineups, they sometimes offer free food and beer, and feature the most hyped bands you've read about on Pitchfork, Brooklyn Vegan, Stereogum, etc.

4. Eat some barbeque, you're in Texas.

5. Late night parties are highly overrated and typically saturated with people who look like this or this. Free Sparks from 1-4 AM will also bring horrible results the next day.

6. Actually, you should go to the after parties because Lindsay Lohan might be there. This means there's probably an after-after party in her hotel room. That's where you come in.

Hugs,
Scott

Tweakbird at La Cita/The Henry Clay People work "part time"

1. Finally. No conflicting schedule issues or other shows I have to be at. Tweakbird are playing at La Cita tonite in Downtown, L.A courtesy of Hairbrain/Cold Sweat Records. and I couldn't be more excited. Check out their MySpace page and listen to "Whorses".

2. I got my copy of the new Henry Clay People EP, Working Part Time, in the ml. I am seriously digging it. Fans of Archers of Loaf, Pavement, and Plastic Constellations will rejoice--maybe harder than they did on the last full-length?

3. The new HCP tunes also bring up a good question: Will Pavement ever lose their appeal or will you ever meet someone who doesn't appreciate Stephen Malkmus? Discuss.

4. The quartet have created a ridiculous month of lineups in February to help celebrate their residency every Monday at the Echo. Now all they need is you.

Download: Andy Sings! taken from Working Part Time, available at their residency.

Adorable - "Footnotes: Best of 1992 -1994"

The title should make you take a step back, just a bit. Not because Adorable were a bad band or insulted their fans during their intense live shows. Just take a look at the time span...three years for a greatest hits, really? Why not just buy their only two albums Against Perfection (1993) and Fake (1994)? Both are worth owning.

"Sunshine Smile" is their swan song, "Sistine Chapel Ceiling" rocks, and "Vendetta" is a pretty darn good single. With the exception of the Sunshine Smile EP I don't own any of the other b-sides or rarities, and come to think of it I don't need them. Only the most rabid of fans who worship at the alter of Creation probably already sold them on Ebay years ago. And that's the kind of dude/chica that's going to pre-order this disc today.

Cherry Red gets released on March 25 in the UK. More album info!

Astrobrite: "Orange Cremesicle" (1995)

Scott Cortez has many projects and releases, but my favorite is Astrobrite. It's one of a handful of bands that the Chi-town resident has created over the past 17 years. Cortez is typically known for his work in the early 90's under the Lovesliescrushing banner and now performs with his latest band Star. In all honesty everything he's recorded resembles...everything that he's recorded.

"Orange Cremesicle" (spelled three different ways on many formats) is pure noise pop, in the most literal sense. Sheets of white noise and spectral vocals have never sounded so massive on any recording I've heard. Most people I know either love it or can't stand it.

I had originally purchased the cassette
version (shown) back in Phoenix, AZ in '95 during the Beautiful Noise Festival for a whopping 5 bucks. And look at that cover. A bright shot of illuminating candies and radiating colors that reflect exactly what you're going to hear. Listen at your own risk.

Mahogany: "Supervitesse" (2006)

I blew my chance catching Brooklyn's Mahogany during SXSW back in 2002 (seems so long ago). I guess I figured they'd tour the west sooner than later, especially after the release of 2006's stunning Connectivity!. The album isn't so new anymore but it sure sounds refreshing in 2008. Fans of comceptual rhythms, dynamic layering, and sheets of reverberated guitar will stop in their tracks after hearing the group breeze through an album cut like "Supervitesse". There haven't been many bands to really expand on the shoegaze-dreampop blueprint in my opinion. Mahogany are an exception and really take off on this one.

Aloha

I got a bit excited when I logged onto MySpace earlier tonite. Aloha are coming to town this spring with new tunes, and they are indeed a great live band to watch. Then I glanced over to see that they're playing The Knitting Factory and thought of something. There needs to be a website that warns bands which venues sound good and which ones should be avoided completely.

Their new EP, Light Works, is out now on Polyvinyl.

I did a quick rundown of bands I would try and catch in red. I'm not too fired up about watching Roger Waters tread through Dark Side of the Moon without Pink Floyd. Seems kinda cheesy.

Men at Werk

Bronson has unveiled some more Coachella acts, which makes the event look a tad bit more exciting. URB has also made a post about the entire lineup. I'm not sure if they're allowed to do that but you can check out the list by clicking here. If this list turns out to be accurate then I'd say with confidence that this is the most inconsistent weekend of artists ever. I'm pretty bummed.

Dreams die hard or Does it Offend You (Hell) Yeah!

After an incredible amount of speculation about what could have been an amazing year for Coachella we are finally given the first confirmed "big names" for 2008. Jack Johnson and Roger Waters? The initial list of headliners isn't quite what I had hoped for. Like many folks out there I'm a massive fan of The Verve and would love to see Portishead at any venue in Los Angeles, but I envisioned something bigger. Kevin Bronson broke the news first early this morning and will have more updates on his Buzz Bands blog throughout the day.

So far:
Roger Waters
The Verve
Portishead
My Morning Jacket
The Breeders
Rilo Kiley
The Raconteurs

Jack Johnson
Autolux
Cold War Kids
The Bird and the Bee
Does it Offend You Yeah?

No:
Prince
David Bowie
My Bloody Valentine
Radiohead

Maybe it's time that the city of Los Angeles (bookers and club owners) initiated their own festival within the city limits, or something similar to SXSW. No-chella 2009?

European Son

Probably the most exciting thing happening at SXSW this year, so far, is Lou Reed. He's been pegged as 2008's keynote speaker during the music week (March 12 - 16) and is sure to cause some fandemonium. While I'm still not 100% sure if I'm going down to Austin this year I'd love to have a simple 10 minute chat with Lou and pick his brain.

Here's an mp3 of RIDE covering and texturizing the Velvet Underground's "European Son". This version originated on the amazing Heaven and Hell compilation back in 1991 and also featured amazing covers by The Wedding Present, Chapterhouse, Nirvana, Buffalo Tom, James, the Telescopes and Screaming Trees. Talk about a great a lineup!

Stoked on Pitchfork, scared for My Bloody Valentine

Everyone has their harsh and polarized opinion regarding Pitchfork. I myself have loved the site, then loathed it, and I'm now starting to love it again. The introduction of the "Forkcast" and bringing in news editor Amy Phillips (forgive her for putting Fall Out Boy in her "albums of the year" list) has refreshed the site. There is nothing better or more comprehensive on the internet. Also, have you noticed the scarcity of demeaning and inaccurate album reviews? I have, and I think it shows that at least they're listening to their readers as much as they love to listen to themselves. Kidding!

Today's review of the Brit-Box is another example of why I continue to go back to Pitchfork on a daily basis. The review is near perfect, maybe not the score, but the actual review itself. Scott Plagenhoef couldn't be more correct as he dices through every disc, the songs that Rhino has compiled, and the transparent radio feel that is portrayed throughout the collection (Bingheimer over Peel). Overall, the Brit Box ain't too shabby for purists but it is excellent as an introduction to the artists (picking RIDE's "Vapour Trail" over the epic "leave them behind" sums it up perfectly for me). Everyone should own at least 90% of the bands that are featured and 100% of the mysteriously ignored Slowdive.

The Brit Box is relevant in theory and I'm happy Rhino recognizes the importance of the music. Hopefully all the young bloggers and dance kids/poseurs out there will realize that there is a ton of really great music out there that existed before the year 2003. Hey kids! After you're done jerking off to bands like Vampire Weekend and Dan Deacon go ahead and play a track from Blur's Parklife or My Bloody Valentine's Isn't Anything. Hell, I hear there's this one band called The Byrds who are kind of decent.

I feel I can stand mighty tall on the biggest friggin' soapbox ever made and tell you this because I could pretty much go toe-to-toe with anyone on the planet about the knowledge, experience and culture of mid 80's pop/post punk to 90's shoegaze, US college rock/indie and the hit-or-miss era of Brit-pop. I continue to judge and praise music based on how it relates to these genres whether I'm conscious of it or not. And let's be honest, we all have some kind of mechanism of "greatness" or standard of listening that is more personal than simply comparing everything to great bands like the Beatles, the Velvet Underground or even Can.

I grew up on a steady diet of Depeche Mode, The Smiths, Siouxsie, The Damned and The Cure (pretty much in that order) from grades 6-9 then dove head first into the Stone Roses, My Bloody Valentine, The Pixies and Sonic Youth all throughout High School. There are many other bands that are relevant, but those are the most important. I've seen almost all of these acts in their prime, met some of my idols, and could probably point out my steady hearing loss to a certain quartet who are finally getting their shit together after playing their final US gig at the Palace (Avalon) 16 years ago.

The other point I wanted to make stems from the recent announcement of MBV's return to the music world. While I was originaly pretty excited by the fact that I'll finally get to hear a new album from one of my heroes I've also become more concerned for the band. Is it really a smart idea that Kevin, Colm, Belinda and Deb get up on that stage--or even bother to make another record? Think about it. The legacy and acclaim that My Bloody Valentine has garnered is unparalleled to any other act in the last 20 years (Nirvana are a distant 2nd). They're legendary for their Creation Records catalog and equally adored for doing absolutely nothing. And once they hit that stage in June at London's Roundhouse they will become the biggest target of blog-message board criticism and music industry hype ever. I'm more worried than excited for MBV simply because they have nothing to gain and so much to lose.

I'm crossing my fingers for MBV. I'm sure with today's technology they'll be able to work in those loops perfectly and really make the vocals accurate to the mix on Loveless. If not they can always go back to what they've been great at, disappearing completely.

E V E R E S T

What I like best about the photo above is how happy they all look. It also happens to represent the attitude of the members, playing for the sheer joy of it and doing what you love because music is permanently ingrained into your personality. What's even better is that the quintet, who are a razor sharp collection of musical professionals who have played in many other great acts, construct flawless, melodic rock that can be enjoyed on so many levels. I could go on for hours arguing which band or icon is their closest influence or reference but it doesn't even matter, their songs are just too good.

The first slot at Spaceland is typically the start time for "new bands" or groups with little draw. Monday's crowd was already packed by 9:07 pm. Check out the dates below and adjust your calendar to experience what I'm talkin' 'bout.

1/24: Sundance Film Festival - Ascap Music Cafe, Park City Utah

Mezzanine Owls, Growls and Howls

It's a shame that January's Monday night residencies at the Echo and Spaceland feature two solid bands who pretty much share the same audience, but this Monday's vote points to Spaceland. Not because I absolutely need to see the Parson Redheads for the 22nd time, or equalize my attention between the awesome Radar Bros., it's simply because the Mezzanine Owls' last performance opening for the Lilys a few weeks back raised the bar very, very high.

Maybe I didn't catch enough Mezzanine Owl gigs during the end of 2007 but their new material is fucking outstanding. So on January 14th make the decision to see the Mezz, then go about your business. If you're bored by the first song then don't feel bad about leaving. Radar Bros. are just a short trip away at the Echo and We Barbarians, who aren't too shabby either, rock the Silverlake Lounge.

p.s. I've been trying to catch this band for weeks but there's always a conflict in my schedule/personal life. Someone please tell me that their live set is as good as their MySpace streams.

Hung with Power

After several listens of the industrious noise symphony known as Fuck Buttons I keep going back for another whuppin'. The layering is uplifting and gentle at first, mostly linear, and even monotonous at times. Then the charge of fuzz covers the mix with some eerie and somewhat disturbing vocal bursts. There's a message buried in there, even though the words are impossible to discern. The first thing I think of is some poor guy in Iraq calling in for help...or an air strike...something unpleasant and urgent. And that my friends is what draws me closer to the Worcester duo's music.

With only one release to their name Fuck Buttons
will soon debut Street Horrrsing via ATP Recordings on March 1st.

Radar Bros.

Ex-Medicine guitarist and all-around radical dude Jim Putnam is showcasing his musical skillz every Monday during their residency at the Echo this month. So why does such an esteemed and veteran band like Radar Bros. even need a residency? Well, The Radar Bros. are releasing their highly-anticipated album Auditorium on January 29th (Merge) with an impressive selection of support bands.

Last week the band also debuted the first single/video taken from their new record, "When Cold Air Goes to Sleep". The vibe is very Pink Floyd-Meddle era and vocally hypnotizing. So that means I'll be checking out the residency at least a couple of times this month, if not more. Tomorrow night's lineup also features Le Switch and ex-radar member Brian Thornell's Wrongway Driver.

1/7: The Echo - Los Angeles, CA - w/ Le Switch, Wrongway Driver and Twilight Sleep
1/14: The Echo - Los Angeles, CA - w/ Tables & Chairs and Correatown

1/28: The Echoplex - Los Angeles, CA (CD Release Party! - w/ Everest and Adeline

Caring is Creepy

The Shins' Marty Crandall, aka the funny guy in the band who actually interacts with the audience, and ex-girlfriend/America's Next Model contestant Elyse Sewell were both charged with domestic violence last night after an altercation in a Sacramento Hotel (Pitchfork). Both landed in jail and will go to court next week. Sewell posted bail, Crandall is still in the tank, and both have battle wounds. Ex-Girlfriend Elyse Sewell aired the dirty laundry on her LiveJournal blog, which has been taken down, and also posted a photo of her bruised "phantom" limb. Ouch.

I feel pretty bad for the rest of the Shins and Sewell. I'm guessing the charges will be dropped/dismissed unless there's a witness that comes forth. Crandall will most likely be replaced, even if he is innocent. Sewell definitely has a future in some new reality tv series. All of a sudden every Shins song title is completely relevant to the situation.

From the Basement...to the stars

Nigel Godrich's "From the Basement" series was announced about a month ago in conjunction with a fresh helping of Autolux info and gig dates. Mr. Godrich needs no introduction, he sometimes helps this band make killer records, but this series sure does. "From the Basement" uses intimate performance videos with several buzzed about and/or influential bands doing what they do best. The camera footage is also very sharp and the audio captures the live sounds very well.

There are 6 installations featuring artists like Super Furry Animals, The Shins, Sonic Youth, Thom Yorke, The White Stripes, the mighty Autolux and many others I'm not so concerned about. Tonite's show starts at 9pm (UK time) on Sky Arts - channel 267.

According to iTunes "Plantlife" is the trio's most popular download. I really can't disagree with that:

Radiohead: Scotch_Mist

George W. Bush is going to be replaced this year, and that makes me very, very happy. Radiohead are going to tour the United States this year, and that makes me very, very happy. Scotch Mist is simply awesome. From Stereogum:

"
The film was made by Radiohead, Nigel Godrich, Adam Buxton, Garth Jennings, Stanley Donwood, Ric Jerrom, Hugo Nicolson and Dan Grech-Marguerat. The webcast features live performed songs (Weird Fishes/Arpeggi, Bodysnatchers, Jigsaw Falling Into Place, 15 Step, Videotape, Reckoner, House Of Cards and All I Need), a track from the previous webcast (Faust Arp - Jonny & Thom) and a video for Nude."
