Album Review: Fuck Buttons - 'Street Horrrsing'

Thumbnail image for Fuck buttons_album.jpgFuck Buttons: Street Horrrsing (ATP Recordings)
7/10

Fuck Buttons' Street Horrrsing -- which was released today -- is scary, twisted and heavy. All six tracks slowly build with pulsating, distorted keys only to unleash a frightening chorus that doubles as the soundtrack to a gruesome murder. Andrew Hung and Benjamin Power are the architects behind this controlled chaos, which is sprinkled with light melodies and fuzzy vocals. They keep the elements of the music simple and powerful, resulting in a cohesive album.

Most of the tracks hit the eight-minute mark yet never sound tired or drawn-out, which is why it's so easy to get lost in the surging tide of sound. Songs like the epic "Bright Tomorrow, the tribal ghosts on "Ribs Out", and the chilling sonics of "Race You to the Bedroom - Spirit Rise", which adds a disturbing vocal passage that sounds like a young man pleading for back-up on the battlefield, are brutal and honest.

Some listeners may find much of the music uncomfortable to handle, but after repeated listens those are the exact reasons I'm still drawn to it. If you're a fan of artists like Yo La Tengo, Skinny Puppy, and the distorted synths of Aphex Twin, then this may be your cup of fucking tea.
